Cassie Lomas Masterclass

Cassie Lomas is a celebrity makeup artist whose client list boasts the likes of Rita Ora and Iggy Azalea as well as countless other A list celebrities.

I was lucky enough to train in makeup with Cassie at her academy (I have also written a review on training at CLMA) and recently went along to her Red Carpet makeup Masterclass held at her makeup academy in Manchester. If you trained at the academy the masterclass was free to attend, if you didn't train there the cost was £25 which was redeemable on the night against the academy's makeup courses. At £25 this masterclass was an absolute bargain for any makeup artists out there wanting to learn more about makeup. Other masterclasses being held by celebrity makeup artists cost well into the hundreds of pounds to attend - so if you missed out on this one, I would definitely recommend to keep an eye out for the next time Cassie hosts a masterclass!

Cassie describes wanting to create a modern, pretty aesthetic within her makeup style, and so the look for the masterclass was classic, highlighting the models natural beauty without applying too much makeup. Her inspiration for the look was Bella Hadid at Cannes film festival, who always looks flawless on the red carpet.

Cassie began the masterclass by focussing on skincare. She would spend as much time as she could on skincare with clients, stressing that the more skin prep you do - the less you have to do with the makeup. She first cleansed her models skin, followed by applying the Rodial diamond face mask, then used a face gel to moisturise (Rodial's Stem Cell Gel features on my blog post about my favourite products!), then a serum and a face oil and also applied a lip oil. Cassie spent time after applying each of these products really working them into the skin, almost giving the model a face massage. This left the natural skin with a glow.

Cassie then primed the skin using an Hourglass oil free primer. She chose oil free here as she had already put oil into the skin when she was prepping. Cassie also used a mattifying primer in the T-zone.

For foundation, Cassie mixed a few of her favourites together to create the desired look - this included Nars skin tint, Hourglass liquid powder foundation and Armani Luminous Silk foundation. When applying foundation, Cassie applied it in light layers rather than one heavy layer to make sure it lasted.

To contour, Cassie used a nude liquid lipstick from her own capsule makeup collection with B. Beauty from Superdrug - they also sponsored the masterclass and gave us all some products to take home!

Cassie left her models brows natural, which she said is becoming more of a trend now rather than drawn in, defined brows. She applied a brow gel through them to coat and give some colour to the brows.

For the eyes, Cassie used her pigments from B. Beauty. She started with the shade "It's Them" and applied it all over the lid. "Shine On" pigment was then applied in the inner corner of the eye to highlight.

For lashes, Cassie chose Ardell Demi Wispies but also applied some individual lashes to the outer corners to make them a bit different. As Cassie was going for a fairly natural look, no eye liner was applied.

Cassie also used her B. whipped bronzer mixed with her illuminator over the cheeks, temples and under the jaw. To highlight, Cassie used her B. pigment in "Supermodel Sheen" and applied it in a "C" shape around the cheekbone.

For blush, Cassie chose Mac's "Warm Soul" and set the whole makeup with Crème de la mer powder.

To finish the look, Cassie went for a bold lip and used her B. liquid lipstick and went over it with clear lipgloss. Below is a photo of Cassie's final makeup look!

Training at Cassie Lomas Makeup Academy

After deciding I wanted to pursue a career in makeup – I looked at a few courses and chose to study Fashion Makeup at Cassie Lomas Makeup Academy (CLMA). The course was full time for 6 weeks, 10am-4.30pm. I chose Cassie Lomas because of Cassie’s success as a makeup artist, and was excited to be taught by herself along with other leading industry experts.

If you are thinking of going on the course, expect to be taught by Cassie once a week, the other days are taught by other working makeup artists, all in different fields – but all very successful! It’s great being taught by a range of people as you pick up different tips and techniques from each person. You also get an insight into each of their careers which can help you decide what route you would like to go down!

Included in the course, you also get some brushes from the Cassie Lomas brush range and a small makeup kit – this included some high end makeup products from brands such as Mac and Illamasqua as well as some high street brands, such as B. from Superdrug – who Cassie is an ambassador for.

I really love the makeup brushes we were provided with, and ended up buying the entire set of brushes! Good brushes really make a difference to your makeup. My favourite brushes from Cassie’s range are Polly – which is an angled fluffy brush, perfect for contouring! And Buster, which is a small blending brush, great for applying eyeshadows in the crease of the eye to build colour and blend at the same time!

If you are going on the course, you also have access to the academy’s makeup kit which is full of products! But I would definitely recommend bringing in whatever makeup you already have, and expect to buy quite a lot along the way! You don’t know what you’re going to be taught each day, so bring your entire kit with you every day. On the course, you also go on a trip to the Mac and Illamasqua free standing stores, where you get to shop with the makeup artists discount!

The course included three photo shoots with professional photographers and models – I was excited for this as it was the direction I wanted to go into with makeup! The photographers we worked with were Craig Fleming, Karl Collins and Hannah Furness. The models were provided by agencies Boss, Nemesis and J’adore. After leaving the course and taking part in photo shoots myself, I realised how much we had been taught at CLMA about how photo shoots run, what is expected of you on set and how to be professional with photographers and models. I felt confident leaving the course and working straight away as CLMA had prepared us well for a career as a makeup artist alongside teaching us the makeup skills!

The academy also has an events team which graduates can get work from. When I left the course, I began working straight away. I took part in photoshoots and got work through the events team at CLMA, which included working for Spanish brand “Elrow” at the Warehouse Project and I am also going to be a part of the Clothes Show Live’s makeup team! To succeed after leaving the course you need to work hard yourself to get work, however the events team is a great starting point.
